A Newer, Broader Definition of Copyright and Fair Use

Last year a long and involved document called "The High Cost of Copyright Confusion" was published by the Media Education Lab of Temple University. They are funded by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. Fortunately, in November of 2008, the center released new, more liberal guidelines which will empower students and teachers to use copyrighted materials for "transformative" applications under the "fair use" provisions.

Here are some links that will explain the new guidelines:

This is really an exciting triumph for educators and students. Please take a look at the links. So many of the existing guidelines for teachers on copyright use are very restrictive, and these new guidlines should help to reduce anxiety.

Carolyn -
Or should I call you Ms. Carolyn. I'm 46 and still think teachers should be addressed with a title - weird, I know.
Thanks so much for commenting on my blog. I LOVE to write and wish more folks would read -- I like to think of it as the truth about parenting. I live near DC and parenting is a competitive sport around here. No one admits that it's really hard and their children aren't perfect - except me. I had a column in a local paper for a few years - but when the new editor came he hired a bunch of guys who thought like him and fird me. Boo hoo.
So now I blog -- and hope some mom's - who need to know they're not alone - will find it.
Feel free to share it with others - it's a gal thing. We need to stop being critical of one another - and be supportive. Parentings the hardest job I've ever had - and the only one I can't get fired from. Go figure.
Thanks for the lovely comments on my paintings too -- that's what I do when I'm not writing - knitting - or nagging my children - or walking the dogs . . .
